PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a material which has sufficient infrared reflective power, is excellent in thermal stability and heat resistance, and does not raise concerns about safety and environmental issues. SOLUTION : An infrared reflective material is a perovskite-type composite oxide which contains at least an alkaline earth metal element, at least one element selected from titanium, zirconium, and niobium and, if necessary, manganese and/or iron, a group IIIa element such as aluminum and gallium in the periodic table, zinc, etc. The infrared reflective material can be produced by mixing an alkaline earth metal compound, a titanium compound and, if necessary, a manganese compound and/or an iron compound, a compound of a group IIIa element or a zinc compound at predetermined amounts and firing the obtained mixture. Since the obtained composite oxide is in the form of powder, the compound oxide can be mixed with paint or a resin composition, and used for various purposes, for example, of painting a roof or an outside wall of a building, or of painting a road or a sidewalk to alleviate the heat island phenomenon.
