PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a phosphor consisting of materials different from those of conventional rare earth-activated sialon phosphor and oxide phosphor. SOLUTION : The phosphor includes AAl2Si5O2N8crystal (A is Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba or Zn) or its solid solution crystal in which metal ions M (M is at least one selected from Mn, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Tm, and Yb) is solid-soluted. The phosphor emits fluorescent light having a peak at a wavelength ranging from 450-700 nm. The phosphor is produced when a raw material mixture comprising metals, oxides, carbonates, nitrides, and the like of A, Al, and Si respectively is burnt at 1, 200-2, 200°C in a nitrogen atmosphere.
