PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an alkaline storage battery which increases active sites of a hydrogen storage alloy and can obtain the sufficient output improving effect by enabling a sufficient electrolytic solution to be supplied to circumferences of the increased active sites. SOLUTION : In the alkaline storage battery 10, the hydrogen storage alloy is constituted of an A component comprising an element containing at least a rare earth element, and a B component comprising the element containing at least nickel, the alloy stoichiometric ratio of the B component to the A component is 3.8 or more, an alloy main phase is the hydrogen storage alloy having A5B19structure, the mass of an electrolytic solution retained by a hydrogen storage alloy negative electrode 11 is 0.11 g or more per 1 g of the hydrogen storage alloy, and the surface area ratio (S2/S1) of the total surface area (S2 m2) of a carbon based material (conductive agent) to the total surface area (S1 cm2) of the hydrogen storage alloy is 30 or more.
