A novel fluorescent substance in which the luminescence wavelengths can be controlled is provided without forming a composition in which a rare and expensive raw material is used in a large amount. The fluorescent substance is a compound which contains an ion that fluoresces and which has a garnet structure that comprises a rare-earth element, aluminum, and oxygen, the compound having a composition in which the element combination of the rare-earth element and aluminum has been partly replaced with an element combination of an alkaline-earth metal and zirconium (Zr) or of an alkaline-earth metal and hafnium (Hf).
