A white light ensuring high output stability, high light focusing and high luminance is provided by a white light source for use in spectroscopic equipment, production control, illumination, etc. A white light emitting material comprising a halide glass containing 20 to 45 mol% of AlF3 and 40 to 65 mol% of the sum of alkaline earth fluorides consisting of 0 to 15 mol% MgF2, 7 to 25 mol% CaF2, 0 to 15 mol% SrF2 and 5 to 25 mol% BaF2 and further containing 10 to 25 mol% of a fluoride of at least one element selected from among Y, La, Gd, Yb and Lu, the halide glass doped with ytterbium ions as bivalent rare earth ions becoming a light emission center, is used as an amplification medium.
