PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for recovering a rare earth element at high purity by a safe and simple process. SOLUTION : The method for recovering a rare earth element includes : an adding step of adding a raw material containing the oxide of a rare earth element to a molten sulfate; a dissolving step of electrolyzing the molten sulfate to which the raw material has been added and dissolving the rare earth element contained in the raw material in the molten sulfate; and a reducing step of electrically reducing, after the dissolving step, the molten sulfate in which the rare earth element is dissolved.
