PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for efficiently polishing glass containing an alkaline earth metal, and a method for producing an optical element utilizing the polishing method. SOLUTION : The surface of glass containing alkaline earths is modified by sulfate ions and/or carbonate ions. The modification is carried out by immersing the glass in a solution containing sulfate ions and/or carbonate ions, or by putting the glass in one or more gas atmospheres selected from the group consisting of sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide and carbon dioxide gas.
