The aim of the invention was to significantly reduce the effort for the thermal stabilization of the laser material, to improve the efficiency and to prevent thermo-optical interferences of the laser radiation. According to the invention, the laser material (3) is deep-frozen (11) for the use of the rare earth laser in order to prevent or reduce the heat that is generated and to be evacuated. The invention is especially advantageous for lasers having high continuous power outputs or high pulse peak outputs at mean and high repetition rates.
