PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a catalyst which is used in a partial oxidation reaction of a hydrocarbon to produce a hydrogen-containing gas, is inexpensive and does not cause deposition of carbon. SOLUTION : The hydrocarbon such as methane is oxidized partially by using the catalyst obtained by depositing Ni on a carrier composed of an oxide of a rare earth element and Al2O3, preferably, on the carrier obtained by covering the surface of an Al2O3particle with CeO2to produce a gaseous mixture containing CO and H2.
