PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a voltage nonlinear resistor and a method for manufacturing the same which can maintain the state in which square-wave tolerable amount characteristics are fine even in increasing the resistance.
SOLUTION : In the voltage nonlinear resistor which is produced by using zinc oxide as a principal component, and includes an R phase 5 containing a rare-earth element, a spinel phase, and a bismuth oxide phase as a crystal phase, an area rate of the R phase 5 in a cut-off plane of a resistor is specified to a range of 0.02 to 5%. An excellent particle growing suppression effect by the R phase 5 is utilized, thereby materializing an increase of the resistance, while an increase of a total area of insulating material particles is suppressed to maintain the square-wave tolerable amount characteristics in a fine state.
