A self-starting rare earth permanent magnet motor includes three-phase stator windings. Terminals (A2-C2,A3-C3,X1-Z1,X2-Z2,X3-Z3) of each phase stator winding except for a beginning terminal and an end terminal (A-C,A1-C1,X1-Z1,X4-Z4) are provided with at least one tap. Different connections of the terminals correspond to different induced electromotive forces. A method for controlling the self-starting rare earth permanent magnet motor includes : when installing the self-starting rare earth permanent magnet motor for the first time, detecting the current supply voltage and selecting an induced electromotive force corresponding to the supply voltage; and selecting and connecting a corresponding terminal by the induced electromotive force. The rare earth permanent magnet motor can adapt to different supply voltages by connecting different terminals. The rare earth permanent motor can automatically adapt to the changes of the supply voltage. The induced electromotive forces are always matched with the supply voltages, so that the power factor of the rare earth permanent magnet motor is improved.
