PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a silica-based material having strong mechanical strength and large specific surface area and also excellent chemical stability. SOLUTION : The silica-based material contains silicon, aluminum, at least one kind of fourth period elements chosen from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, nickel and zinc, and at least one kind of basic element selected from a group consisting of an alkali metal element, alkaline earth metal element and rare earth element, wherein 42-90 mol% silicon, 3-38 mol% aluminum, 0.5-20 mol% the fourth period element and 2-38 mol% basic element are contained per total quantity of silicon, aluminum, the fourth period element and the basic element.
