A process for producing an MAl2O4 : Eu, RE type long-afterglow fluorescent ceramic is provided in which the cost of raw materials can be reduced. Also provided is a sintered long-afterglow fluorescent ceramic in which the body is not yellow. The process, which is for producing an MAl2O4 : Eu, RE type long-afterglow fluorescent ceramic (wherein M is an alkaline-earth element and RE is a rare-earth element other than europium), is characterized by mixing a BAM (alkaline-earth aluminate) fluorescent substance, an alkaline-earth metal compound, an aluminum compound, and a rare-earth metal compound and firing the mixture. The MAl2O4 : Eu, RE type long-afterglow fluorescent substance is white.
