PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for manufacturing a bismuth-substituted rare-earth iron garnet single crystal used as a Faraday rotator that does not need a permanent magnet, in which a once-saturated Faraday rotation angle is maintained even for an external magnetic field up to 200 (Oe) in the temperature range of -40 to 85°C, and which has the temperature property of the Faraday rotation angle 45 degree being equal to or lower than 0.08 degree/°C.
SOLUTION : The bismuth-substituted rare-earth iron garnet single crystal is developed by a liquid-phase epitaxial method expressed by the chemical formula : Tb3-x-yYbxBiyFe5-zGazO12 (0.2≤x≤0.4, 1.2≤y≤1.5, 0.65x+0.44≤z≤0.79x+0.54).
