A method for producing niobium monoxide which is suitable for a capacitor material and composed of fine particles each having a large specific surface area. Specifically disclosed is a method for producing niobium monoxide by reduction-firing of niobium pentoxide or niobium dioxide, which is characterized in that niobium pentoxide or niobium dioxide and a salt containing a rare earth element are wet blended and fired, and after the firing, the resulting niobium oxide, wherein the rare earth element is doped at the position of niobium atom, is mixed with a reducing agent and subjected to reduction firing.
