PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain a catalyst for purification of exhaust gas capable of efficiently removing NOx in an atmosphere contg. oxygen in excess as well as in a reducing atmosphere, having NOx removing activity in a wide temp. range, excellent in heat resistance and durability and capable of suppressing the transition of a temp. at which NOx purifying performance is exhibited to a higher temp. side. SOLUTION : This catalyst for purification of exhaust gas contains iridium, a rare earth element and sulfur. Exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine is passed through this catalyst so that the temp. of the exhaust gas at the inlet of the catalyst is regulated to 200-700 deg.C.
