Gage configurations for drill bits

An earth-boring bit 110 includes a plurality of cutting elements positioned on at least two roller cone cutters 114, 115, 116 having cutting element gage inserts 180 contributing to an operative gage row 180a of the drill bit which comprise less than 31 percent of a total cutting elements 180, 181, 182, 183 of the drill bit that contact the bottom of the borehole. At least one roller cone may have no cutting elements contributing to an operative gage row of the drill bit. Reducing, by minimizing or eliminating, the total gage count on a roller cone cutter may increase the penetration depth of the inserts that contact hole bottom, and thus increase the rate of penetration of the bit. Also disclosed is a method to design a roller cone drill bit including designing an initial bit, testing the initial bit; and adjusting the bit design to optimize at least one of rate of penetration and wear resistance.
