A composition for the treatment of wood contains formate together with sorbate and/or benzoate, dissolved in an aqueous liquid carrier. The formate, the sorbate or the benzoate is particularly an alkali metal salt, an alkaline-earth salt, an aluminium salt, or an ammonium salt. The composition is used for preservation of the wood simultaneously against surface mould and wood-rotting and blue stain fungi.
