PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for treating radioactive waste which curbs the hydrogen produced through the radiolysis of the water in a container and seals radioactive waste inside it even if a large quantity of hydrogen is produced and even after the oxygen in a container is consumed.
SOLUTION : The radioactive waste 3 cut off into pieces of the size/length which allows the waste 3 to be accommodated in the container 1 is stowed in it. It is filled with a powdery catalyst 4 which allows a powdery stable compound to carry an active ingredient which accelerates the reaction that forms water out of hydrogen and oxygen. A lid 2 are closed and the container 1 and the lid 2 are welded to seal them. Even if a large quantity of hydrogen is produced, the concentration of hydrogen inside the container 1 can be kept low. Oxides of rare-earth elements that absorbs/emits oxygen or composite oxides of rare-earth elements and other metals may be used as the powdery stable compound. Since it supplies oxygen even after the oxygen in the container 1 is consumed, the hydrogen produced through radiolysis can be removed.
