PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To prevent discharge contraction, in a face-to-face electrode type planar discharge lamp of a type wherein discharge is generated between a translucent electrode formed on a light extraction-side board and electrodes formed on a back-side board. SOLUTION : This planar rare gas discharge lamp has a structure wherein dielectric barrier discharge is generated, by using a xenon-containing gas as a discharge medium, between the first electrodes 6 formed on the back-side board 2 and the translucent second electrode 3 formed on the light extraction-side board 1 facing to the back-side board at a certain distance. Third electrodes 7 are formed side by side with respect to the first electrodes 6 on the back-side board by forming spaces between them and themselves for generating dielectric barrier discharge between the first electrodes 6 and themselves. Since discharge is generated not only between the first electrodes 6 and the second electrode 3 but also between the first electrodes 6 and the third electrodes 7, discharge paths are increased, and discharge contraction is restrained.
