PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To produce an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst capable of being produced advantageously from an aspect of cost with high work efficiency, excellent in high temp. durability and capable of also acting effectively even at relatively low temp. SOLUTION : In an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst wherein a coating layer having a two-layered structure consisting of first and second coating layers is formed on a heat-resistant support carrier so that the first coating layer is directly carried and formed on the support carrier, Pd is added to the first coating layer in a state carried on Al2O3 or composite oxide of Ce and Zr represented by the general formula Ce1-(x+y)ZrxMyO2-z (wherein M is an alkaline earth metal element or a rare earth element excepting Ce and Zr, Ce is 0.3<=Ce<=0.8 and Zr is 0.2<=Zr<=9.7) and at least one of Pt and Rh is added to the second coating layer in a state carried on the composite oxide represented by the above general formula and, as the composite oxide of Ce and Zr, one other than the composite oxide represented by the general formula is not added regardless of whether Pt or Rh is curried.
