PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a short-arc mercury lamp with a coldest-part temperature within an enclosed part of an airtight vessel high, with little temperature difference, and with excellent lamp characteristics and reliability.
SOLUTION : The short-arc mercury lamp SHL is provided with an ultraviolet-transmitting airtight vessel 1 equipped with an enclosure part 1a surrounding a discharge space 1c and a pair of sealing parts 1b extended from either end of the enclosure part, a cathode 2K and an anode 2A sealed inside the airtight vessel 1 and protruded into the surrounding part 1a along a tube axis direction away from and opposed to each other, and a discharge medium containing mercury and rare gas sealed inside the airtight vessel 1. Provided that a length of the surrounding part 1a in the tube axis direction is L1, and a distance from an inter-electrode center P located between the cathode 2K and the anode 2A to an end part of the cathode 2K on an inner face of the surrounding part 1a is L2, a formula : 0.07≤{L2-(L1/2)}/(L1/2)<0.2 is satisfied.
