PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an optical amplifier which uses an amplifying medium to which a broadly general rare earth ion is added, and which can keep a gain profile constant. SOLUTION : In an optical amplifier using an amplifying medium to which a rare earth is added, the amplifier is capable of controlling a gain profile so that it is kept to be constant. The optical amplifier has : a rare earth added optical fiber or a rare earth added optical waveguide which has a rare earth ion as an amplifying medium added to its core and/or to its clad; an exciting means to excite an amplifying medium; an optical resonator which generates laser oscillation at a specific wavelength of natural emitted light which is generated in the amplifying medium and amplified; and a control unit which monitors a light signal in the optical amplifier in order to control the exciting means. Also, there is provided a method that controls the gain profile of the optical amplifier to be kept constant. COPYRIGHT : (C)2004, JPO
