A plasma surface treatment process for glass comprises preparing a substrate surface, preparing a process gas, igniting a plasma, and reducing the alkali and/or alkali earth metal in the substrate. The process gas contains hydrogen and/or nitrogen. During plasma treatment the substrate surface is 50-500 especially 120-400oC.
