PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To use the hydrogen storage alloy for a secondary battery and to improve the flatness characteristic of discharge potential by providing a specific composition consisting of Mg, one or more kinds among seven elements including Li, one or more kinds among rare earth elements including Y, one or more kinds among Ca and three other elements, Ni, and one or more kinds among Co and seventeen other elements. SOLUTION : The hydrogen storage alloy has a composition represented by general formula MgaLbR1-a-b-cTc(Ni1-xNx)z. In the formula, L is one or more elements selected from Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Sr, and B; R is one or more kinds selected from rare earth elements including Y; T is one or more kinds selected from Ca, Ti, Zr, and Hf; M is one or more elements selected from Co, Mn, Fe, Al, Ga, Zn, Sn, Cu, Si, B, Nb, W, Mo, V, Cr, Ta, P, and S; and 0.2<=a<=0.35, 0
