A reduction catalyst has a support, a group VIII metal(s) and tin, some of which has a 0 oxidation state and some of which is partly oxidized. The 0 oxidation tin forms greater than or equal to 10% of the catalyst mass and has an isomeric displacement of 0.8-2.6 mm/second and a tetrapolar explosion of 0.65-2.00 mm/second. Independent claims are included for the following : (a) the preparation of a catalyst as above by depositing the group VII metal in several stages before depositing the tin; and (b) the catalytic transformation of hydrocarbons using the catalyst prepared in (a). Preferred Features : The group VIII metal is palladium. The support is aluminum. The 0 oxidation state tin is ≥ 30% of catalyst mass. The isomeric displacement is 0.8-1.5 mm/second and the tetrapolar explosion is 0.95-1.5 mm/second. The oxidized tin includes stannic ions. The catalyst also includes a halogen or halogenated compound, a metalloid, an alkali metal or rare earth metal. The catalyst includes particles smaller than 2 mm.
