PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain an alkaline storage battery in which a high battery capacity is obtained and which is superior in charge and discharge characteristics by improving a hydrogen storage alloy for the alkaline storage battery to be used for a negative electrode of the alkaline storage battery. SOLUTION : In manufacturing the hydrogen storage alloy for the alkaline storage battery to be used for the negative electrode of the alkaline storage battery, a gas containing He gas was used as an atmospheric gas in manufacturing by melting and casting the hydrogen storage alloy which contains at least rare-earth element, Mg, Ni, and Al, and which is expressed by a general formula Ln1-xMgxNiy-a-bAlaMb(in the formula, Ln is at least one kind of element selected from Zr, Ti, Y, and rare-earth element, M is one kind of element selected from V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ga, Zn, Sn, In, Cu, Si, P, B, and Zr, and conditions of 0.05≤x≤0.35, 0.05≤a≤0.30, 0≤b≤0.5, and 2.8≤y≤3.9 are satisfied).
