PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnetic recording medium, wherein the electromagnetic transducing characteristics are superior, protrusions on the surface of a magnetic layer are suppressed to a minimum and dropout due to running abnormality and head contamination is reduced effectively. SOLUTION : The magnetic recording medium has the magnetic layer on one surface side of a non-magnetic support body, wherein the magnetic layer contains magnetic particles having 5 to 50 nm particle diameter and comprising a single-crystal of rare earth-transition metal-semi metal, and a binder, and at least one smoothing layer is provided between the non-magnetic support body and the magnetic layer.
