Preparation of cross-linked or branched organopolysilane (I) comprises reacting at least one silane unit with a metal element (alkali- or alkali earth-metal). Preparation of cross-linked or branched organopolysilane (I) comprises reacting at least one silane unit of formulae (RSi and =Si=) and at least a silane unit of formula (R 2Si) and optionally a silane unit of formula (R 3Si) (where the silane units have at least one general formula of (RSiX 3(1a) or SiX 4(2a)), (R 2SiX 2) (3a) or optionally (R 3SiX)) with metal element (alkali- or alkali earth-metal), where the addition of reaction partners are adjusted such that during the reaction of (3a) with the metal element, (3a) contains at most 2 mol.% of 1a or 2a. R : H or 1-18C hydrocarbon; and X : F, Cl or Br. Note : The definition for R 2and R 3is not given in the material. An independent claim is also included for (I) obtained by the preparation method.
