PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide technology for improving in-plane dimming performance in a dimming device. SOLUTION : A dimming device in accordance with the present invention includes a first dimming plate and a second dimming plate configured to be relatively movable along a first axis. The first dimming plate includes a first polarizing layer having a first transmission axis and a first retardation layer having an in-plane slow axis varying along the first axis or a second axis intersecting the first axis; and the second dimming plate includes a second polarizing layer having a second transmission axis and a second retardation layer having an in-plane slow axis varying along the first axis or the second axis. The first dimming plate and the second dimming plate at least partially oppose to each other. An absolute value of a difference between Re(1) and Re(2) is equal to or lower than a first threshold or less, where Re(1) is a retardation profile of the first dimming plate along the first axis and Re(2) is a retardation profile of the second dimming plate along the first axis.
