PURPOSE : To readily alkylate a specific triazine derivative into a substituted one useful as an intermediate for medicines, agrochemicals, dyes, etc., in high yield by reacting the triazine derivative with an aldehyde or a ketone in the presence of a specified catalyst and a gas containing hydrogen. CONSTITUTION : (C) A 1, 3, 5-triazine derivative having a (monosubstituted) amino group on a ring carbon atom [e.g. a compound of the formula one or more of X , X and X are each a group of the formula NHR [R is H, a (halogen, CF3 , etc., -substituted) 1-20C alkyl, a (halogen, CF3 , etc., -substituted) 2-20C alkenyl, etc.] and the rest are each a group of the formula NR R (R and R are each R , etc., except H), a (halogen, OH, etc., -substituted) 1-20C alkyl, etc.}] is reacted with (D) an aldehyde or a ketone in the presence of (A) a group VII or VIII catalyst of the periodic table (e.g. an Ni, an Ru, a Pd, a Pt or an Re catalyst) and (B) a gas containing hydrogen. Thereby, the (monosubstituted) amino group in the component (C) is alkylated.
