The ball (10) has a surface made up of an array of hexagonal and pentagonal patches (12), joined together at their edges. The pentagonal patches may have a phosphorescent surface layer (14). This consists of a flexible plastics substrate containing granules of rare earth phosphorescent pigment. The phosphorescent surface layer is supported on a flexible multilayer substrate.
