PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a new type discrimination indicator whose information can be read only when irradiated with IR light and which is applicable for various kinds of products, and to provide a discrimination method. SOLUTION : The discrimination indicator is produced by laying and holding at least one kind of granular fluorescent material in a base material so as to display a predetermined figure by up-conversion fluorescent light, wherein the fluorescent material emits up-conversion fluorescent light in a visible light region when irradiated with IR light. The fluorescent material comprises, for example, glass particles having dispersion of a halide crystal containing a rare earth element.
