This method for producing a rare earth magnet comprises : a preparation step for preparing an Sm-Fe based alloy having an SmFe9+α phase as a main phase by quenching a molten alloy in which the atomic ratio of Sm and Fe is 1 : 8.75-1 : 12; a hydrogenation step for hydrogenating the Sm-Fe based alloy to cause phase decomposition such that a part of the SmFe9+α phase (α=0.1 to 3.0) is decomposed into SmH2 and Fe; a molding step for obtaining a molded body by pressure-molding the hydrogenated Sm-Fe based alloy; a dehydrogenation step for dehydrogenating the molded body to re-combine SmH2 and Fe obtained by the phase decomposition at the hydrogenation step; and a nitriding step for nitriding the dehydrogenated molded body, wherein, in the Sm-Fe based alloy at the preparation step, an integrated diffraction peak intensity Int (Fe) of the (110) plane of αFe by X-ray diffraction is equal to or less than one-ninth, in terms of the integrated intensity ratio, of an integrated maximum diffraction peak intensity Int (SmFe) within a range of 2θ=30° to 50°.
