The invention relates to an active GRIN lens, to methods for the production thereof and to uses of same. The active GRIN lens of the invention comprises at least two layers of a metal oxide or a mixture of at least two metal oxides, and is characterised in that at least one layer is doped with a rare earth element, and in that at least one of the layers has a different refractive index from the adjacent layer, the active GRIN lens having a pre-determined profile with a complex refractive index.
