PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a surface coated tool having high wear resistance and high chipping resistance. SOLUTION : This surface coated tool 1 is obtained by coating the surface of a substrate 2 with a coating layer 3. The coating layer 3 is formed of Ti1-a-bAlaMb(CxN1-x) (wherein M is one more kinds selected from elements of fourth group, fifth group and sixth group of the periodic system, rare earth element, and Si, 0.4≤a≤0.65, 0≤b≤0.3, and 0≤x≤1). The coating layer 3 is formed of a structure mainly composed of a columnar crystal 5, and the columnar crystal 5 is formed so that when the Ti content ratio of the whole coating layer 3 is Tit, rich Ti columnar crystal 5a having Ti content ratio of Tir, the ratio Tir/Titbeing 1.2-5, is dispersed.
