PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a transparent and polycrystalline ceramic having superior optical quality required for an optical element such as a lens or a prism, and a method for producing the same.SOLUTION : The transparent and polycrystalline ceramic includes a crystal composition with the stoichiometry of A2+XBYDZE7 (wherein, X, Y and Z are satisfied with -1.15≤X≤+1.1, 0≤Y≤3, 0≤Z≤1.6 and 3X+4Y+5Z=8; A is at least a trivalent cation selected from the group of rare earth ions; B is at least a tetravalent cation; D is at least a pentavalent cation; and E is at least a divalent anion) and includes a crystal having a cubic pyrochlore or fluorite structure of at least 95 wt.%. An optical ceramic has a range of an average particle size of favorably 5-300 μm and includes at least one sintering auxiliary agent selected from the group consisting of SiO2, TiO2, ZrO2, HfO2, Al2O3 and fluorides in a starting material.COPYRIGHT : (C)2011, JPO&INPIT
