Disclosed is a method for easily producing a solid solution fine particle having high crystallinity and small particle diameter wherein zirconia, ceria and a rare earth element oxide are solid-solubilized at a desired composition. Specifically disclosed is a method for producing a solid solution fine particle, which is characterized by comprising, in the following order, a step for obtaining a melt containing, in mole percentages of oxides, 5-50% of ZrO2, CeO2 and RE2O3 in total (wherein RE represents one or more elements selected from rare earth elements other than Ce), 10-50% of RO (wherein R represents one or more elements selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and Zn), and 30-75% of B2O3, a step for forming an amorphous substance by rapidly cooling the melt, a step for obtaining a precipitate containing solid solution crystals of ZrO2, CeO2 and RE2O3 by heating the amorphous substance, and a step for obtaining solid solution fine particles by separating the solid solution crystals from the precipitate.
