Disclosed is a novel phosphor for vacuum ultraviolet excitation, which is obtained by doping a porous silica with at least one element selected from the group consisting of rare earth elements which exhibit fluorescence by f-f transitions, Rb and Cs, and then firing the thus-doped silica. This phosphor is excited by ultraviolet light in the vacuum ultraviolet region, and can be stably used for a long time. In addition, this phosphor has high luminous intensity, while exhibiting adequate chromaticity.
