PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a nickel-hydrogen secondary battery having a high capacity density and suppressed with the initial self-discharge of the charge/discharge cycle. SOLUTION : This battery is provided with an electrode group 5 having a negative electrode 4 containing a hydrogen storage alloy expressed by the general formula (R1-x Mgx )Niy Az , (where R is at least one element selected from rare earth elements including yttrium, Ca, Zr and Ti, A is at least one element selected from Co, Mn, Fe, V, Cr, Nb, Al, Ga, Zn, Sn, Cu, Si, P and B, and (x), (y) and (z) are 0
