PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a scintillator excellent in scintillator performances that is sufficiently large in fluorescence output and sufficiently small in energy resolution (value) and that is used for a medical purpose PET apparatus, high energy physics, petroleum exploration and the like. SOLUTION : The scintillator contains cerium as the luminant center and also germanium in the host material. Preferably the content of the germanium is, in a molar ratio, ≥1/10, 000 and ≤1/10 of that of the cerium. The host material is preferably a crystal containing a rare earth element.
