PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide rare earth-iron-manganese-nitrogen based magnet powder exhibiting excellent oxidation resistance and high magnetic characteristics, especially high rectangularity in demagnetization curve, and having high remanent magnetic flux density, and to provide its production method. SOLUTION : In the method for producing rare earth-iron-manganese-nitrogen based magnet powder by heating a mixture of rare earth oxide powder, transition metal powder and a reducing agent in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to cause a reducing reaction and then nitriding mother alloy powder obtained by reducing diffusion for diffusing a rare earth metal into transition metal powder, rare earth-iron-manganese-nitrogen based magnet powder after nitriding is cracked to have a crystal distortion (integration width) of 0.09 deg. or less and then classified such that magnetic powder having a particle size smaller than 20 μm becomes 17 wt% or less.
