FIELD : chemistry. SUBSTANCE : invention relates to refractory fibre obtained using a sol-gel method, which can be used as heat-insulating material, for example in supporting structures of antipollution catalysts in automobile systems for catalytic afterburning of exhaust gases and filters for solid particles in engine exhaust gases. The fibre obtained using a sol-gel method contains 65-99 mol % of a refractory-based composition and 1-35 mol % of a component selected from oxides of alkali-earth metals, oxides of alkali metals or mixtures thereof. If present, said oxides of alkali-earth metals include one or more of CaO, SrO, BaO or mixtures thereof, content of calcium oxide being less than 25 mol %. The refractory base contains SiO2 and Al2O3. The method involves preparing sol containing precursors of SiO2, AI2O3 and one or more oxides of alkali and/or alkali-earth metals, forming fibre from the sol and firing the obtained fibre at temperature higher than 900°C. EFFECT : low shrinkage and high elasticity of the fibre at operating temperature and sufficient solubility in body fluids. 32 cl, 7 tbl, 10 dwg
